The glass-lip tint guide
How to layer a water tint for a glossy, just-bitten finish.
in this story
Korean lip tints are made to look like your lips, only better: a wash of colour that’s brightest in the centre and fades softly out, with a glassy shine on top. Here’s how to get it.
Know your tints
- Water tints are thin and sheer. They stain the lips, so the colour lasts, and they build easily — rom&nd Glasting Water Tint and rom&nd Dewyful Water Tint are easy places to start.
- Glossy tints sit between a tint and a gloss, with more shine in one step — like rom&nd Juicy Lasting Tint.
- Velvet tints dry down to a soft, blurred finish. Great for a matte gradient, or as a base under gloss — try RedCookies Water Dew Velvet Tint.
- Tinted balms give the sheerest wash of colour with the most comfort, like Tocobo Glass Tinted Lip Balm.
For the glass lip, a water tint or glossy tint with a clear layer on top is the classic combination.
Start with soft lips
Tints settle into dry patches, so prep first. Smooth on a lip balm, give it a few minutes, then blot off the excess. You want lips that feel soft but not slippery, so the tint can grip.
If your lips are flaky, use a lip mask overnight — like Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask or Medicube PDRN Lip Sleeping Mask — and gently wipe away any loose flakes with a damp cloth in the morning.
Colour from the inside out
Dot a water tint like rom&nd Glasting Water Tint or Lilybyred Juicy Liar onto the inner part of both lips. Press your lips together, then blur the edges outward with a fingertip. Keep the centre the most intense — that gradient is the whole look.
Brightest in the middle, soft at the edges.
Want a softer edge still? Before you apply the tint, pat a little concealer or foundation over your lips to mute their natural outline. The colour then fades into your skin instead of stopping at the lip line.
Build, then seal
For more colour, add a second thin layer to the centre once the first has set. Then add the glass: a clear gloss, or a tinted balm like Tocobo Glass Tinted Lip Balm, pressed onto the middle of your lips adds shine without blurring the gradient.
The layers
- Balm, blotted
- Water tint
- Blur out
- Gloss on top
Fingertip, brush or wand?
The wand is perfect for dotting colour onto the centre of your lips. Your fingertip is the best tool for blurring it out — the warmth helps the tint spread softly. A small, flat lip brush gives you the most control if you want a crisp centre and a very gradual fade.
Choosing your shade
- Everyday: a shade a little deeper than your natural lip colour reads as healthy rather than made up.
- Cool undertones (your veins look bluish, silver flatters you): berry, plum and rosy pinks.
- Warm undertones (your veins look greenish, gold flatters you): coral, peach and brick reds.
- Not sure: a true cherry red, like Lilybyred’s Cherry Crush, suits almost everyone.
One tint, three looks
- Everyday gradient: one thin layer in the centre, blurred out, with a clear balm on top.
- Full glass lip: two layers of tint over the whole lip, a slightly deeper centre, and a generous layer of gloss.
- Evening: a deeper berry or brick shade over the whole lip, the edges softened, and gloss only in the centre for a three-dimensional shine.
Keep lips in good shape
A glass lip looks best on smooth lips, so a little care between wears pays off. Use a hydrating balm through the day, a lip mask at night, and a lip balm with SPF when you’re outdoors — lips can burn too. For a matching look, dab a touch of the same tint onto your cheeks and blend it out.
Make it last
Water tints stain, so the colour stays after the shine wears off. Through the day, reapply just the gloss, and touch up the centre with tint after you eat. In a hurry? A glossy tint like rom&nd Juicy Lasting Tint gives you colour and shine in one step.
For extra staying power, apply one layer of tint, blot it with a tissue, then add a second thin layer before your gloss.
Taking it off
Because water tints stain, a splash of water won’t remove them completely. Hold a cotton pad soaked in lip and eye makeup remover or cleansing oil against your lips for a few seconds, then wipe gently. Finish with your usual cleanse and a little lip balm.
Quick answers
Will a water tint dry out my lips? It can feel drier than a balm, which is why the prep and the glossy top layer matter. A lip mask at night keeps things soft.
Can I use a tint on my cheeks? Many people do — dab a little onto the cheeks and blend quickly with your fingertips before it sets.
Why does my tint go patchy? Usually dry patches or leftover balm. Prep, blot well, and apply thin layers rather than one heavy one.
Can I use lip liner with a gradient lip? You can, but blend it inward so there’s no hard edge — the gradient look is all about softness.
Do tints transfer? Once a water tint has set, the stain transfers very little — the glossy top layer is what you’ll see on a cup.
Gloss or balm on top? Gloss gives the glassiest shine; a balm is more comfortable and wears off more evenly.
