PDRN, explained
The salmon-DNA ingredient behind more than 100 products on our shelves — what it is, what it isn’t, and how to fit it into your routine.
in this story
What is PDRN?
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide: short fragments of DNA, usually purified from salmon or trout. On an ingredient list you’ll most often see it as sodium DNA.
In Korea, injectable PDRN has been used in dermatology clinics for years — which is how the “salmon injection” nickname, and the hype, found its way into serums and creams.
You may also come across PN, short for polynucleotides. It comes from the same source but is made of longer DNA chains, and it’s mostly talked about in clinic treatments. In skincare, PDRN is the name you’ll see on the front of the bottle.
Why it’s suddenly everywhere
K-beauty has a habit of borrowing from the clinic. Once the “salmon injection” became a talking point, brands started putting PDRN into almost every step of a routine. On our shelves alone you’ll find it in serums and ampoules, creams, sheet masks, sunscreens, lip masks and even scalp and hair care.
That variety is good news: you can try the ingredient in whatever format suits your routine, whether that’s a rich capsule cream, a sheet mask for a weekly boost, or a lip sleeping mask at bedtime.
What can it do in skincare?
In a serum or cream, PDRN is used as a soothing, hydrating ingredient for skin that looks tired, stressed or dull. Most of the clinical research is on injections rather than topical products, so keep your expectations realistic.
A comfort-and-bounce step, not a needle in a bottle.
Much of what you’ll notice comes from the whole formula. Every PDRN product in this story pairs it with humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, and most add niacinamide, peptides or centella. That’s why a good PDRN serum feels cushiony and leaves skin looking smoother and plumper straight away — the hydration does that part.
Give any new product about four weeks of steady use before you decide whether it’s working for you. Skin changes slowly, and the first few days mostly tell you whether you like the texture.
Reading the label
Ingredient lists are written from the highest concentration to the lowest (ingredients under about 1% can appear in any order). PDRN is usually used in small amounts, so sodium DNA often sits well down the list — that’s normal.
What the label does tell you is what PDRN is working alongside. Look for:
- Humectants such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate, for that bouncy, hydrated feel.
- Niacinamide, for skin that looks dull or uneven.
- Peptides, often listed with names like palmitoyl tripeptide-1 or acetyl hexapeptide-8.
- Centella asiatica or madecassoside, if your skin tends to look red or stressed.
How to use it
Apply it after toner and before moisturizer, morning or night. PDRN plays well with hyaluronic acid, peptides and centella, and most formulas pair it with at least one of them. If your skin is reactive, patch-test first.
Where it goes
- Cleanse
- Tone
- PDRN serum
- Moisturize
In the morning, finish with sunscreen.
A few drops of serum are enough for your whole face and neck. Pat it in rather than rubbing, and let it settle for a minute before your moisturizer. PDRN isn’t known to clash with other common ingredients, so it can share a routine with vitamin C, retinoids or exfoliating acids — just introduce one new product at a time, so you know what’s doing what.
Choosing your PDRN product
- Oily or combination skin: a lightweight serum such as Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum may be all the hydration you need in the morning.
- Dry skin: follow your serum with a cream, or go straight to a richer formula like Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Capsule Cream.
- Prefer plant-derived: Beauty of Joseon’s red bean serum or VT PDRN Reedle Shot 100.
- Want a weekly treat: a PDRN sheet mask once or twice a week, after toner.
PDRN by format
- Serums and ampoules are the most concentrated way to use it, and the easiest to add to a routine you already have.
- Creams combine the ingredient with your moisturizing step — handy if you like a short routine.
- Sheet masks are a once- or twice-a-week boost; leave them on for the time on the pack, then pat in what’s left.
- Sunscreens such as Medicube PDRN Pink Tone Up Sun Cream put it in your last morning step, with a soft tone-up finish.
- Lip masks keep things simple: apply at bedtime, wake up to softer lips.
A simple PDRN routine
In the morning: cleanse, tone, a few drops of PDRN serum, moisturizer and sunscreen. At night: double cleanse if you wore sunscreen or makeup, then tone, PDRN serum and a slightly richer moisturizer. If you also use a retinoid or an exfoliating acid, keep those for the evening and let the PDRN serum be the comfortable step around them.
What it isn’t
It isn’t an injection, and a serum can’t do what a clinic treatment does. PDRN also isn’t an exfoliant or a retinoid, so it’s not the kind of ingredient that makes skin tingle or peel. If a PDRN product does prickle, look at the rest of the formula: VT’s Reedle Shot line, for example, adds micro-sized silica that the brand says can cause a slight tingle.
It also isn’t a substitute for the basics. A PDRN serum works best in a routine that already has a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer and daily sunscreen.
Who might skip it
Salmon-derived PDRN isn’t vegan. If you avoid animal-derived ingredients, look for plant-derived versions: Beauty of Joseon’s red bean PDRN serum is one, and VT says the PDRN in its PDRN Reedle Shot 100 comes from Korean ginseng.
Allergic to fish? Check the ingredient list — some formulas also contain fish-derived extracts such as milt or salmon egg extract — or ask us before you buy. And if you use prescription skincare, check with your dermatologist before adding anything new.
Quick answers
Can I use PDRN every day? Most PDRN serums and creams are made for daily use, morning and night. Follow the directions on the product.
Is it good for sensitive skin? PDRN itself is generally gentle, but formulas vary. Patch-test, and choose a short, fragrance-free ingredient list if your skin reacts easily.
Will it replace my moisturizer? Usually not. Most PDRN serums hydrate, but you’ll still want a moisturizer on top to keep that hydration in.
How long until I notice anything? The hydration is instant. For everything else, give it a few weeks of steady use.
